I am trying to put my Dell Optiplex GX270 motherboard into a custom pc case, i have figured out how to fit it in by drilling new holes for it but i cant figure out how to make the power hook up because the power cord in the custom case that would go to the motherboard is alot different if you have a pc like this you would know what i mean any ideas how to make it work? even if i can just make it power up is fine i don't need the restart etc... thanks in advance!Help putting Dell Optiplex GX270 motherboard into custom case?
i managed to install asus P5KPL-VM in dell GX270 mini tower casing.

changes are as follow:-

1. remove the metal plate that holding the original motherboard. hard-rock glue plastic holder for the new motherboard to the casing metal plate. insert the new board to the plastic holder.

2. use the back panel from the new motherboard. it fits!

3. for the power supply, i take out the internal part of dell power supply, and put the internal part of new power supply. this is to be done with EXTRA CARE FULL as you need to solder the AC power to the power supply board. have to change the power supply due to my asus board need 24 pin power supply to power up.

4. power switch need to be modify the circuit to fit asus board pin layout.

5. usb front panel. have to custom made PCB. have not done it yet tho ;)

6. buy floppy drive size card reader and extra USB. asus board have 8 USB. 4 back, 4 front. with dell casing have already 2 USB, the extra 2 USB will go to card reader floppy drive size.

now, for your case, you already mounted the board to your new casing. the rest should be easy. you can use any new power supply that have 24 pin [the extra 4 pin should be able to remove as it only a slot in to the original 20 pin, remove that and you can plug the power cord to dell motherboard. as for the power button, front panel USB and also audio, do study abit on the original power button to get you the pin for:-

1. power button

2. power LED

3. HDD LED

4. standby LED

5. USB pin layout

6. front audio jack.

i have a suggestion to power up. you have to buy a ribbon cable. on one end, crimp it to the original size plug [i think you should be able to find this in any electronic shop], the other end, separate all the ribbon cable, solder it to PCB board for electronic project [usually it have several copper line you can solder it to]. from the casing power switch, solder to the correct pin which you can trace from the old power button. cut the PCB board to the size that u need. cover up all the copper layer with double sided tape, stick it to your casing.

good luckHelp putting Dell Optiplex GX270 motherboard into custom case?
give it up now as a bad idea...you can't install dell mb's in anything but dell boxes.

you can't up grade a dell period... been there, done that, and failed, ;%26gt;( Dell make their boxes so that only dell mb fit into their boxes..

just get yourself a new motherboard... that the processor and memory will fit into. You will have no problems with the rest of the hardware fitting into your new box
You have a ribbon cable feeding the front of the case huh?

You don't put a proprietory Dell motherboard in a standard case. Buy a board with the same chipsets on it as your Dell board and use it instead. With the same chipsets you can use the same ram and your hard drive will fire up without reinstalling the OS.
